An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably experienced bank orthoptist to join our friendly team at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. The Orthoptic department at Mersey and West Lancashire (MWL) are seeking Orthoptic support on a part time/sessional basis to cover a period of leave in the department.
The successful applicant will be required to work autonomously to deliver high quality Orthoptic assessment and management, including; stand alone Orthoptic clinics, joint refraction clinics and both adult motility/paediatric strabismus clinics working collaboratively with the Ophthalmologists at St Helens hospital and sites across St Helens and Knowsley.
An Enhanced DBS Certificate, with the checking of the Adults and Children's Barred Lists is required for this position.
Provide professional, high quality, comprehensive and specialised Orthoptic services as an autonomous practitioner for Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Responsible for the Orthoptic investigation, diagnosis, management and treatment of complex visual and ocular alignment problems using specialised examination techniques and equipment and providing specialist advice and source of expertise.
Accountable for all aspects of own clinical practice.
Provide clinical teaching of Orthoptic students, Pre-Registration Optometrists, Junior Doctors, Medical students, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (student & qualified), Health care assistants and support workers in hospital and at outreach venues.
Work collaboratively and co-operatively with other clinicians to influence service development and ensure quality care is delivered.
To work as an active member of a multi-disciplinary team providing Orthoptic expertise.
Undertake audit and participate in departmental research.

Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.
Achievements
