Responsibilities Of An Autism Support Learning Support Assistant (LSA)
- One-on-One Support: Provide personalised support to students with autism both in and out of the classroom, helping them to access the curriculum and engage in activities.
- Individual Education Plans (IEPs): Assist in the implementation of IEPs, working with teachers to adjust learning materials and strategies to suit the specific needs of each student.
- Social and Emotional Support: Support students in developing social skills, building self-confidence, and fostering independence.
- Progress Monitoring: Monitor the progress of students, providing regular feedback to teachers and parents, and making adjustments to support strategies as necessary.
- Collaboration: Work closely with teachers and other staff members to develop and deliver effective lesson plans that cater to the needs of students with autism.
- Classroom Management: Assist with managing the classroom, ensuring a structured and supportive learning environment for all students.
- Inclusive Learning Atmosphere: Foster a positive and inclusive environment that promotes the well-being of all students, ensuring they feel valued and supported.
- Professional Development: Participate in school meetings, training sessions, and ongoing professional development to enhance your knowledge and skills.
- Experience in Autism or SEN Support: Previous experience working as a Learning Support Assistant or in a similar role with children who have autism or special educational needs (SEN) is highly desirable.
- Educational Background: A background in education, psychology, or a related field will be beneficial but not essential.
- Passion for Supporting Children: A genuine passion for working with children and supporting their educational and personal development.
- Strong Communication Skills: Ability to build positive, supportive relationships with students, teachers, and parents, and to communicate effectively with all parties involved in the student’s learning.
- Knowledge of Autism: An understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and effective support strategies to meet the needs of students.
- Commitment to Inclusion: A dedication to fostering an inclusive learning environment where every student is valued and supported.
- Clear Enhanced DBS: Have an updated CV (with two relevant references from the last two years and covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
