We are constructing a state-of-the-art underground mine to enable the extraction of Polyhalite – a unique multi-nutrient fertiliser – along with the necessary infrastructure both above and below ground that will be required for transport, processing, and distribution.

POLY4 is our flagship multi-nutrient fertiliser product. Made from polyhalite, it contains four of the six macro-nutrients that are essential to plant growth. It allows farmers to maximise their crop yield, increase quality and improve soil structure with one simple product.

Job Description

Appointed in accordance with the mines Regulations 2014, Regulation 10 (1)(a) Management structure, the Mechanical Engineer is responsible for ensuring high standards of engineering design, installation, and maintenance by undertaking over inspections of all surface and underground mechanical installations. Ensuring that all mechanical engineering specifications are updated as necessary and in accordance with all current legislation and company policies and procedures.

Your duties will include:

  • Lead the Mechanical engineering input, design and execution at all stages of the project including construction, tunnelling and shaft sinking, supporting ongoing design through to full mine operation.
  • Advise the Mine Manager regarding the safety of mechanical designs and installation of all plant and equipment by actively taking part in in reviews of design criteria and functional specification in respect of safety critical mechanical systems.
  • Develop and communicate the mechanical standards and associated operational policies for constructing and operating the mine and appoint such suitably qualified and competent persons at Woodsmith, to ensure mechanical standards are maintained.
  • Work with the training department to ensure that any training linked to regulatory Health and Safety compliance in respect of mechanical safety is conducted at the earliest opportunity.
  • Have agreed specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timebound KPI`s with regular appraisals with their respective line manager
  • Immediately rectify or stop any operation or work that in their opinion needs to be rectified or stopped on grounds of safety
  • Ensure that mechanical competent supervision is present during shaft sinking and site activities on a 24/7 basis ensuring statutory compliance across the whole site on their shift.
  • Carry out and record statutory inspections, testing and maintenance in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Ensure all dangerous occurrences involving mechanical equipment systems and installations across the project are investigated.
  • Understand and implement the Company’s safety policy, standards, and systems
  • Conduct health and safety inspections, and record and follow up any actions that are identified
  • Ensure accident and near-miss reporting procedures are understood and complied with, and assist with accident investigations as required
  • Schedule and conduct routine site safety tours, including those which include members of the safety team and contractor personnel
  • Actively contribute to site safety review meetings

Qualifications

  • Significant and proven experience in engineering, and/or shaft sinking operations.
  • Appropriate academic qualifications as updated from time to time in the Anglo American minimum qualifications document.
  • Have undergone or be prepared to undergo recognised supervisory or management training in accordance with the National Occupational Standards relating to your role.
