Trustee Treasurer - Volunteer
Bexley Moorings
Date: 3 hours ago
City: Welling
Contract type: Full time
We’re a long‑established Bexley charity supporting children aged 10–17 through groups, befriending and CBT, and helping parents through peer support. We’re seeking a Treasurer to strengthen our board and ensure the charity remains financially robust.
What difference will you make?
As Treasurer you will have a transformational impact on our organisation. As a small charity with growing demand for our services, strong financial leadership is essential for us to support more children, young people and families in Bexley. The Treasurer will ensure our finances are robust, transparent and strategically aligned with our long‑term goals, allowing us to expand our programmes with confidence.
Their work will directly influence our ability to plan sustainably. By providing guidance on budgeting, forecasting and financial decision‑making, the Treasurer will help us understand what is possible, where we can grow and how best to use our limited resources. This clarity will strengthen the board’s strategic decisions and give our staff team the stability they need to deliver high‑quality support.
The Treasurer will also help us to manage risk effectively. With multiple services—CBT, befriending, youth groups and parental support programmes—each funded through different grants and income streams, we need careful oversight to ensure we remain compliant and financially healthy. Their expertise will support us in meeting funder requirements, improving internal controls and maintaining the confidence of partners and donors.
By helping us diversify and plan our income, the Treasurer will play a vital role in securing the future of our services. Their guidance will ensure we can continue providing life‑changing support to young people who are struggling with mental health, isolation or family pressures. The Treasurer will enable us to reach more children at a time when community‑based mental health support is needed more than ever.
Ultimately, the Treasurer will help us thrive, not just survive. Their contribution will strengthen the whole organisation—building resilience, supporting growth and ensuring we remain a trusted, effective service for the next generation of children and families in Bexley.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for a Treasurer who brings both strong financial expertise and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of children, young people and families in Bexley. The ideal person will have professional experience in finance, accounting, budgeting or financial management—whether from the charity sector, public services, or a corporate environment. They should feel confident analysing financial information, explaining it clearly to others and helping a board make informed, strategic decisions.
One of the most important qualities we’re looking for is the ability to balance detail with big‑picture thinking. We need someone who can ensure our financial processes remain accurate and compliant, while also helping us plan for long‑term sustainability and responsible growth. Experience with charity finances, grant management, or working with restricted and unrestricted funds would be especially valuable, though not essential.
We would also welcome someone who brings a collaborative and supportive approach. Our board is small and hands‑on, so we’re looking for a Treasurer who is comfortable working alongside staff, supporting the development of financial systems and helping to strengthen our internal processes as we expand our services. Good communication skills are essential, especially the ability to present financial information in a clear and accessible way.
Beyond technical skills, we are keen to attract someone who shares our values and is motivated by the impact we make in the community. An understanding of the challenges facing children, young people or families—or lived experience connected to these areas—would be a real asset. We are committed to building a board that reflects the diverse community we serve, so we encourage applications from people with different backgrounds and perspectives.
Overall, our ideal Treasurer is someone who combines financial confidence with compassion, strategic insight with practicality, and who wants to use their expertise to help us deliver meaningful support to local young people.

What will you be doing?
Our charity is at an important stage of development, and as we continue to grow our services for children, young people and families in Bexley, strengthening our governance and financial resilience has become a key priority. Our board is small but committed, made up of trustees who bring passion, lived experience and professional insight. However, we recognise that to move into our next phase confidently and sustainably, we need dedicated financial leadership at board level. That is why we are seeking a new trustee to take on the role of Treasurer.
As a charity that has been supporting the community for over forty years, we operate a range of services that require careful budgeting and ongoing financial planning. These include therapeutic support such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, befriending schemes, social groups for young people, and programmes for parents delivered both in person and through online platforms. Each of these services has different funding structures, reporting requirements and cost considerations, which means financial oversight is increasingly important as our work expands.
Our key challenges include managing limited resources against rising demand, ensuring that our systems and processes remain robust, and planning effectively for long‑term sustainability. We are also navigating the complexities of diversifying our income, managing grants with more stringent monitoring expectations, and adapting to the financial pressures that many small charities across the sector are facing. While our current board members have worked hard to maintain financial stability, we now need someone with the expertise to lead this area more strategically.
The Treasurer will play a vital role in guiding the organisation through this next chapter. They will oversee financial strategy, support the preparation and monitoring of budgets, ensure our financial policies remain compliant and effective, and work closely with staff to maintain strong internal controls. They will also help the board to understand financial risks and opportunities more clearly, enabling informed decision‑making as we plan for growth and explore new funding avenues.
This role is crucial not only because of the complexity of our work, but also because our services make a significant difference to the wellbeing and mental health of local young people. The Treasurer will be joining at a time when our impact is highly valued by families, schools and community partners, and when there is a real opportunity to shape the long‑term direction of the charity. Their contribution will directly influence our ability to reach more young people, strengthen our programmes and continue offering the kind of support that changes lives.
We believe this is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to use their skills to make a meaningful contribution to a local organisation with deep roots in the community. The Treasurer will not only help secure our financial future but will play a central role in ensuring our services can continue to grow and make a lasting difference for years to come.
