About the role
What does the average day look like?
A typical day involves analysing operational and performance data to develop or refine timetable planning rules that support a reliable and efficient railway. You'll work both independently and collaboratively, reviewing proposed changes and understanding their impact on the wider network.
Engagement with stakeholders is a key part of the role, whether that's contributing to industry meetings, discussing changes with operators, or working with internal planning and performance teams to reach aligned solutions. You'll also investigate issues, using data, modelling tools or site-based insight to help identify improvements.
The role offers variety, combining focused analytical work with regular collaboration, and may occasionally involve travel to Network Rail locations or operational sites to support your work and build wider understanding of the network.
A little bit about the team...
The Timetable Planning Rules team is a specialist, remotely based team of approximately 32 colleagues, working collaboratively across locations to support the development and maintenance of timetable planning rules. The role sits within a wider function without direct line management responsibilities, contributing expertise as part of a broader, highly skilled team focused on delivering consistent, high-quality outcomes for the network.

Your experience and skills
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a detail-focused and collaborative individual who enjoys working with data and contributing to complex, technical problem-solving. You will be comfortable working with timetable planning rules and interpreting information from multiple sources to support well-informed, evidence-based decisions.
Strong stakeholder engagement is key in this role, so you will be confident communicating with a wide range of colleagues and industry partners, building effective working relationships and contributing to constructive discussions. You will be just as comfortable working independently as you are as part of a wider team, managing your own workload while supporting shared objectives.
You will be well organised, able to manage your time effectively and deliver to agreed deadlines. Good Excel skills are important, along with a structured approach to analysing and presenting information.
We are also looking for someone who is adaptable and open to a varied working environment, including occasional travel to Network Rail locations and operational rail sites, with flexibility to accommodate ad hoc visits or overnight stays where required. This role would suit someone who is curious, structured in their approach, and motivated by working collaboratively to support a reliable and well-performing railway.
