About The Business Unit
We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Overview Of The Role
Our Liverpool Local Streets & Infrastructure team has a strong track record of delivering civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Liverpool City Region, the North-West and the wider UK. We work collaboratively with local authorities, combined authorities, private developers, contractors and other parts of Mott MacDonald to deliver technically excellent, sustainable and people-centred solutions.

Our work includes streets and highways engineering, active travel, public realm and regeneration, development infrastructure, surface and foul water drainage, sustainable drainage systems, utilities coordination and site-wide infrastructure. The Liverpool team also supports multidisciplinary projects across the transport, buildings, rail, aviation, energy and water sectors, providing an excellent environment in which to build broad civil engineering experience.

To support our growing pipeline of work, we are looking for a proactive Civil Engineer to join our Liverpool team. You will contribute to the design and delivery of infrastructure projects, working alongside experienced engineers, technicians and specialists. Depending on your existing experience and project requirements, your work may include highway geometry, horizontal and vertical alignment, surface and foul water drainage, sustainable drainage systems, signs and road markings, active travel infrastructure, public realm, utilities coordination and development-related infrastructure.

This varied role offers excellent opportunities to broaden your technical knowledge across multiple civil engineering disciplines while developing deeper expertise in areas that interest you. We are looking for someone who is passionate about their career, curious, willing to learn and keen to take on new challenges. We provide structured support for training, professional development and progression towards professional qualification.

Key responsibilities and duties include:
  • Delivering civil engineering design to the required quality, programme and budget, with support from senior colleagues where appropriate.
  • Applying relevant engineering standards, guidance, health and safety requirements and quality procedures.
  • Coordinating your work with engineers, technicians and specialists from other disciplines.
  • Identifying technical issues, communicating them clearly and contributing to practical, sustainable and buildable solutions.
  • Managing your own workload, maintaining accurate project records and taking responsibility for the quality of your work.
  • Communicating professionally with colleagues, clients, contractors and other stakeholders.
  • Supporting a right-first-time approach and contributing to technical excellence, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Sharing knowledge with colleagues and supporting the development of less experienced team members where appropriate.
  • Working flexibly across different civil engineering disciplines, sectors and stages of the project lifecycle.

Essential:
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant qualifications and experience
  • Knowledge or experience of highway and infrastructure design guidance, such as the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, the Specification for Highway Works, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20 or relevant drainage and utilities guidance
  • Relevant experience contributing to the design or delivery of civil engineering or infrastructure projects
  • Experience in at least one relevant area, such as highways, drainage, active travel, public realm, utilities, development infrastructure or site-wide civil engineering
  • The ability to produce clear calculations, drawings, models, reports or other technical deliverables appropriate to your experience
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • A proactive and organised approach, with the ability to manage defined tasks and meet agreed deadlines
  • A commitment to health, safety and wellbeing, quality, sustainability and inclusive design
  • A genuine interest in developing a long-term civil engineering career, with enthusiasm for learning and expanding your knowledge across multiple infrastructure disciplines

Desirable:
  • Experience using design and digital delivery tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, OpenRoads, MicroStation, InfoDrainage, BIM or GIS platforms
  • Experience working with local authorities, private developers, contractors or multidisciplinary design teams
  • Experience contributing to client meetings, design reviews, technical coordination or construction support
